Fire safety in the festive season

Why the festive period increases fire risks

The run-up to Christmas often means decorations, electric heaters, and a busier and more excitable workplace. It’s all part of the fun, but it also can create extra fire risks. That’s why companies need to make sure that fire safety in the festive season doesn't slip off the radar amongst all the other excitements this month.

Decorations and electrics

Fairy lights, tinsel, artificial trees and window displays can brighten up the workplace. But they can also act as fuel if something goes wrong. Before plugging in the lights, check the cables for damage and avoid overloading extensions.

One business we heard about had a close call when a faulty set of lights sparked off a smoky mess in the reception area. Thankfully, an alert team member unplugged them quickly. The lesson? Test everything before it's hung up.

This is exactly why fire safety in the festive season should include proper testing of electrical items brought from home - no matter how much someone loves that 20-year-old set of lights!

Portable heaters and winter warmers

When the temperature drops, portable heaters appear under desks or in drafty corners. They’re handy, but they shouldn’t be anywhere near paper, wrapping supplies, or wastepaper bins. A heater knocked over in a cramped storeroom could easily escalate into something far more serious.

Run a quick reminder with your team: keep heaters clear, upright, and switched off when not in use.

Clear escape routes

It’s amazing how quickly corridors fill up with spare chairs, boxes of extra stock and extra displays. Make sure escape routes stay clear. Even temporary clutter can slow down an evacuation.

Include escape routes in your routine checks - it’s a simple but essential part of fire safety in the festive season.

Check your equipment and your people

Don't forget your regular checks of fire extinguishers, alarms, and emergency lighting. And don’t forget your people - a quick refresher on what to do in an emergency helps everyone feel more confident.

Ultimately, fire safety in the festive season comes down to small, sensible actions: testing electrics, keeping routes clear, checking heaters, and making sure everyone knows what to do. With a few extra minutes of care, the workplace can stay safe - and stay festive. For more workplace fire safety tips take a look at our other blogs - and give us a follow on Facebook!
