Frequently asked school first aid questions
Frequently asked school first aid questions

Is it a legal requirement for schools to have a first aider?

Schools must make adequate and appropriate first-aid provision for employees under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. The number and type of trained first aiders required depends on the school's individual circumstances and needs assessment.

How many first aiders should a school have?

There is no fixed legal ratio for schools. The appropriate number depends on factors such as the size of the school, number of employees and pupils, site layout, activities, risks, working patterns and staff absence.

Does every school need a paediatric first aider?

Where a school provides early years education, the EYFS statutory framework contains additional requirements for paediatric first-aid provision. Schools should check the current framework and ensure their arrangements meet the requirements that apply to their setting.

Does a school need a first-aid kit in every classroom?

Not necessarily. There is no universal requirement for a first-aid kit in every classroom. However, schools need to ensure that appropriate first-aid equipment is readily accessible based on their needs assessment.

Do school first-aid certificates expire?

First-aid qualifications have renewal and refresher requirements, depending on the qualification. Schools should maintain an up-to-date training record and plan renewals in advance.

Does every school accident have to be reported to the HSE?

No. RIDDOR only applies to specified types of incidents and circumstances. Schools should assess accidents against the relevant RIDDOR reporting criteria rather than assuming that every injury is reportable.
