How many first aiders does a school need?
How many first aiders does a school need?

This is probably the question we hear most often.

And unfortunately, the answer isn't: “One first aider for every 50 pupils.”

There is no single legal ratio for schools. Instead, the number of first aiders you need should come from your first-aid needs assessment.

When carrying out that assessment, consider the following.

  1. How big is your school?

A small primary school with one building will have very different first-aid requirements from a large secondary school with several buildings, multiple floors, sports facilities and extensive grounds.

Think about how quickly a first aider can actually reach someone who needs help.

  1. Where are the higher-risk areas?

Not every part of the school presents the same level of risk. You may need to give particular consideration to:

  • Science laboratories.
  • Design and technology workshops.
  • School kitchens.
  • Sports halls.
  • Playing fields.
  • Swimming pools, where applicable.
  • Maintenance and grounds areas.
  • A first-aid needs assessment should take these activities into account.
  1. What happens outside the normal school day?

The school day doesn't necessarily end at 3.30pm. Breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, sports fixtures, performances, parents' evenings and other activities can all affect your first-aid arrangements.

You also need to think about school trips and other off-site activities.

  1. What happens when staff are absent?

This is an easy one to overlook.

You might have plenty of trained first aiders on your staff list, but what happens when several are:

  • On annual leave?
  • Off sick?
  • Attending training?
  • Working off-site?
  • On a school trip?

Your first-aid arrangements should provide enough resilience to maintain appropriate cover.
