Which first-aid qualification do school staff need?
Which first-aid qualification do school staff need?

There isn't one qualification that automatically suits every member of school staff.

Depending on your needs assessment and the nature of the role, you may consider qualifications such as:

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)

EFAW provides basic first-aid training and can be appropriate for some workplace situations.

First Aid at Work (FAW)

FAW is a more comprehensive workplace first-aid qualification and may be appropriate where the needs assessment identifies a requirement for a higher level of first-aid provision.

Paediatric First Aid (PFA)

If your school provides early years education, paediatric first-aid requirements also need to be considered.

The important thing is not simply to count certificates.

Ask:

“Does our training actually match the risks and needs of our school?”

What about nursery and reception children?

If your school has early years provision, there is another layer of requirements to consider. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework sets out specific requirements for paediatric first-aid provision.

Schools need to make sure appropriate paediatric first-aid cover is available when early years children are present and that suitable arrangements are made for outings.

There are also requirements relating to paediatric first-aid qualifications for certain early years staff and staffing ratios.

This makes certificate monitoring particularly important.

A qualification that was valid last month but expired yesterday isn't much use when you're trying to demonstrate compliance.

Tip: Don't wait until a certificate is about to expire. Keep a central training record and set reminders well in advance.
